Per state WARN filings: Meta laid off 1,395 employees across Washington state this week — 20% of its local workforce, part of a 10% companywide cut. Officially framed by Zuckerberg as "AI-driven workforce optimization."

Seattle, Bellevue, and Redmond bore most of the brunt. The framing is partially true and partially marketing. Here's the honest breakdown.

Trading options is complicated. Liquid simplifies your trading strategies.

Trading options can be highly profitable; it can also be highly unprofitable. The problem is that trading options is tough:

  • Option decay is real

  • Picking expiration dates is crucial

  • Market makers scalp retail traders

Liquid allows anyone to trade perpetual futures, or “perps”. Perps are options without an expiration date.

This means you don’t need to worry about Greeks, simply

  • Pick an asset

  • Pick long or short

  • Determine your collateral

  • Determine your leverage

  • Place your trade

Getting started is simple too; start to finish in less than 10 minutes:

  • Login with google

  • No-KYC

  • Deposit with Apple Pay or your bank account

  • Trade

Trading volatility doesn’t need to be harder than absolutely necessary.

The verified numbers

Seattle + Bellevue lost 20% of Meta's local engineering footprint in a single week.

  • 1,395 employees across Washington (state WARN filing)

  • 20% of Meta's local workforce in Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond

  • ~10% companywide — roughly 8,000-9,000 globally

  • Affected roles: engineering, product, design, operations

  • NOT affected: Superintelligence Labs, Reality Labs hardware engineering, core AI infrastructure

  • Severance: 16 weeks base + 2/year of service + accelerated vesting + healthcare extension

What's true vs. marketing

"AI restructuring" is partially honest, partially political cover for performance management.

  • ✓ HONEST: AI tools handle 25-35% of routine engineering tasks now. Some roles genuinely are smaller.

  • ✓ HONEST: Meta spending $60-80B on AI infrastructure. Capital has to come from somewhere.

  • ✓ HONEST: Internal tooling, manual QA, content moderation — these jobs ARE smaller because of LLMs.

  • ✗ MARKETING: Some of these cuts are normal "low-performer trim" cycles dressed as AI strategy.

The counter-data nobody is reporting

  • US software engineering employment UP 2.1% YoY per BLS Q1 2026 data

  • Meta is HIRING 1,200+ AI-specific roles per Q1 2026 LinkedIn data

  • ~80% of affected engineers land at AI startups within 90 days (per earlier Meta cuts pattern)

  • The geographic concentration is the real story — Washington lost 20% of Meta's local presence in a week

What to do if you work in Big Tech

  • Currently at Meta: If you didn't get a notice this week, safe through Q3

  • At another FAANG: Watch for similar AI-restructuring framings. Microsoft did Q1 cuts. Amazon historically lags Meta by 6-9 months

  • Recently affected: Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI, Mistral all hiring aggressively. Your severance covers the runway

  • Considering Big Tech as a target: Reconsider. Anthropic + OpenAI are arguably more stable now

  • Indie hacker / founder: 1,400+ skilled engineers about to hit the market. Recruiting friction drops 50% for 60 days
