Figma just shipped one of the most significant updates in its history: a native AI design agent built directly into the collaborative canvas.

The Verge, TechCrunch, and Fast Company all reviewed it within hours. Consensus: the craft of UX design has changed for good.

What's actually new

  • Multi-LLM under the hood: OpenAI (GPT-image-2 + GPT-5 for visuals), Anthropic (Claude 4.6 for reasoning), Figma's in-house Weavy models for layout

  • Native to multiplayer canvas: Works in real-time alongside human collaborators

  • Generates designs from text prompts: Multi-screen flows in 15-30 seconds

  • Edits via natural language: Select component → ask agent to redesign

  • Respects your design system: Only uses tokens that already exist

  • Iterations on command: "Give me 5 variations" works

Three things it's actually good at

  1. The blank-canvas problem. Generates a complete first draft in 15-30 seconds — saves 5-10 hours per project.

  2. Design system enforcement. Reads your tokens, components, spacing — generates within those constraints.

  3. Iteration at scale. Variant 3 is usually the keeper. A/B test candidates in minutes.

Where it falls short

  • Cannot replace judgment, taste, or brand context

  • Only in Figma Design at launch (not FigJam, Slides, or Dev Mode)

  • Pricing not yet disclosed

  • Quality is uneven — you still need design eyes

Should you adopt it?

  • Solo / freelance designers: Yes, immediately

  • 5+ person design teams: Test it on one project this month

  • Indie hackers: Stack with v0 + Lovable — 3 hours idea to deployed SaaS

  • Senior IC designers: Treat the agent like a fast junior. Direction matters more, not less.
